I'm not going to claim it's the best thing I've ever done, and some of the coloring is rather experimental, but the overall gist of what I was trying to convey; for this year's Nightmare Night celebration, Princess Luna decided to visit Ponyville. Its inhabitants, all dressed up as fictional characters, are in awe as the ruler of the night performs a spectacle in the night sky.
So let's play a little game, try and guess the fictional characters without peeking at the rest of this description. For those who want to know, here are the characters and what they dressed up as (sans Luna because she's obviously not in costume).
Rainbow Dash: Lara Croft [Tomb Raider]
Pipsqueek: Generic Pirate
Button Mash: Super Mario [Super Mario]
Pinkie Pie: Chell [Portal]
Babs Seed: Toph [Avatar - the last Airbender]
Applebloom: Solid Snake [Metal Gear Solid]
Cheerilee: Zia [Mysterious Cities of Gold]
Sweetie Belle: Princess Peach [Super Mario]
Scootaloo: Zoey [Left 4 Dead]
Rarity: Jade [Beyond Good and Evil]
+500 reputation at Servant Phoenix. [TheArtrix]
Reason: Because Toph is awesome, and the idea that earth ponies can earthbend is awesome.
Oh wait, she's right there.
Wonderful selection of costumes, though I don't know why Pip had to be generic when there's a perfectly good Jack Sparrow persona out there. Oh, and is Babs dressed as Toph so she can seed no evil? Clever. Also, nice job on the way you made the characters seem less jammed together by, seemingly counter-intuitively, putting the tops of the buildings so close together. At least to me, it gives the illusion that the perspective is barreled whenever I'm looking at the lower third of the picture. (Or maybe I'm just reading way too much into it.)
Also, Sweetie Belle as Peach is freaking cute!!!
And now the in-depth not-really analysis.
I like your sky. Dat effect of paint with lower opacity and smudges. Oh how you smudged them there smudges! And it surely shows, because they are awesome. Both the northern lights and the clouds. I bet they taste like ice cream.
Bonus points for not erasing the moon. That counts.
And then there's Luna. MOTHERFUCKIN' EXPERIMENTAL LIGHTING GO! Maybe it's the freshness of it in your art, but I don't care, it adds even more awesomeness here.
And don't think I can't see that curly cloud next to the moon there. Oh you Dutch artists and your Starry Nights.
(Also this was the part of the picture I absolutely positively NEED to see/have on a T-shirt.)
Background is pretty, looks cozy. Don't know how you did the lampions, but it's sure good you put them here. CONTRAST!
That's why all the characters look orange, like delicious pumpkin treats, right?
And now to the people... ponies... plonies.
I am pleased you let me inspire you and made Pinkie to be Chell. Regarding Pinkie, I think you are sure now about how to draw her and it can be seen. Also, mmm, dat majestic voluminous wild hair. And Scoot'loo's so badas here she might as well not be a chicken (♪ Come, little chicken... ♪). Aaaand, huehue, Rainbow Butt.
Unfortunately it came out very difficult to see what exactly is Applebloom dressed as.
And yes, I spotted the ant.
P.S.: Obligatory "Protect me, Big Mac!"
But seriously, I'm glad that you like it as much as you do, and that you had the privilege to see it unfold.
See what I did there?
RD as Lara Croft
Button Mash as Mario
Pipsqueak (I guess) as a pirate again
Pinkie as Chell (Portal)
Babs as Toph (Avatar TLAB)
Sweetie Belle as Princess Peach
Scootaloo as Zoey (L4D)
Rarity as Jade (Beyond Good & Evil)
8 out of ten, not bad.
I couldn't tell what AB and Cheerilee were dressed as. I should probably watch Mysterious Cities of Gold, hear it's really good.
An English dub is in the works, but watching the English (fan-)sub isn't much different that watching your anime, except it's in French.
From the start, I did intend to have this contrast between the "painted" night sky and the characters in front. Digital painting is still relatively new to me but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. It is try that I try to draw the attention to the lower part, as this is where most of the interesting things are.
