Webtoons by TheArtrix Webtoons by TheArtrix
I'm sure you know at least one webtoon, and if you don't, this might be a good chance to start knowing at least one. Webtoons have developed into a cult, taking proportion similar to regular TV shows and gathering TV-show like fanbases. The cool thing about webtoons, I guess, is that they're mostly uncensored, they're a product of Internet users similar to ourselves and the relatively frequent updates for something made by one person.

So I made this, in honor to those people who offer the Internet the entertainment that are webtoons. Watch as the various characters battle eachother for your mouse... which is a metaphor for... um... your web browser... I guess.

It's also a little drawing and CGing exercise, and this time I wanted to employ some cell shading. Remarkably, I never really checked into cell chading, and after years of soft shading, it really wasn't all that hard. Me likes it.

And if this makes you want to explore the world of webtoons (more), here's a list:

Bonus Stage by Matt Wilson.
Ebola World by Sam T.
GEOweasel by Niko Anesti.
Space Tree by Ed Atlin.
Evil Josh and Billy by John Berry .

Other webtoons that I considered putting in the pic, but didn't:

Homestar Runner
Robotbox & Cactus
The School Show Starring School

Spectacular Super Secret Squirrel

I don't see any Homestar Runner or Magical Trevor in there.

Wait, what is Magical Trevor?

And that there answers your question. These are the webtoons I liked, not all the webtoons out there.

I love where you put the commander.
Heh. Did you know Ed Atlin only just started to draw ST with teeth only recently?... Maybe you got to him.

I don't think Ed Atlin is aware of this picture. I deliberately did not inform the artists about this to see how long it would take for them to notice it :]

This is full of awesome, but the glaring lack of RobotBox and Cactus is deserving of a smackin' :slap:

Wow, Billy looks all kickass in his, uh... rocket bucket?

It looks like a LOT of work went into this piece. Kudos! (And why am I only discovering this art NOW?)

I could've noted you about this, but it's much more fun to see how much time it takes for the creators to find it themselves :]

cool beans, man.

have you ever seen "Waterman" or "College University"? both are really good series with sort of unimaginative art.

i'd like to see them in your style.

Hahaha, this is amazing, I love your renditions of all the characters, and of course mine. I love how diabolical Weas looks, and the fact that he's got Jim pulling him is just hilarious! Nar and Mitri look awesome too; the front-ish view of Nar is perfect and Mitri's just hilarious floating there. Josh and Billy look so cool, very awesome action shots, and the Bonus Stage and Space Tree gangs look excellent in your style. This drawing is just all around awesome, probably one of my top favorites. And I'm not just saying that because my characters are a part of it, heh.

Nothing left to say here. Except for the mouse which IMHO looks a little plain, even with the shadow over the grey part. Isn't that important though, the main thing here is the action and the movement, which will catch the eye first anyway.

By cell shading you mean.. tools like Polygon Lasso and such? And Soft Shading... that was just simply going over the main colors with those to make a "shadowy" effect?

I download all BS eps up to the end of the third season. Always using the scripts to figure out what the hell they're talking about, or even references to deleted scenes...

I'm prolly never going to watch Space Tree... a job for the drug Police IMHO: ;)

By cell shading I indeed mean the hard-border shadows, by soft shading I mean the kind of shading I applied in Rush Hour and Artrix's take on Danny Phantom. The cell shading is done with a hard-border dynamic brush (and my tablet).

hmmm I can barely recognize them :) except for a few I guess.

Nice picture a use of colours are great.

here's a few crits though. the ground shadows are a bit cheap though, they don't match the character position. secondly the splash screen affect is good on the background, but the characters look frozen. there's no dynamics on them. I know how hard it is, but I also have some pictures on those that help a lot.

Overall just a good piece of art :)

Thanks for the compliment on the colors, that was my main experiment here.

As for the "shadows", they weren't intended to be shadows, more like something to illustrate some movement. Now I must admit, I did a rather quick job on the background, and that was clearly a result of that. It happens when I don't plan the background in advance (like Artrix's take on Naruto except that one doesn't have a background at all).

The drawing itself was drawn rather quick (about an hour or so), and starting from the initial sketch, I wasn't happy about the dynamics. I used the sketch anyway because the focus is on the characters, and not what they're doing. However, if I would make this again, I would make the necessary adjustments to make it more lively and dynamically.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll assure you that I'll be more serious about my next deviation.

This looks really fantastic in color. Your outlining in this is awesome, I like that you've got such interesting shapes and line thickness in the inkwork, and the detail you put into outlining each character with such dynamic poses is impressive. The solid black shadows on Space Tree from the leaves look great. The way they're all interacting is neat too, pushing each other out of the way :]

I guess I'm getting used to inking with Indian ink. I used to use Steadler markers, and although they're great for straight lines, they just can't make those fluent lines as displayed in this pic. I guess that weekly comic is paying off.

Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback :]

No, the one wearing the orange shirt (assuming that's the person you're referring to) is Phil Argus from Bonus Stage.
